Wanna accidently be friends?

Good Morning!
After a dinner party on Thursday to support The People's Community Market (if you haven't heard of this amazing project in Oakland, please check out their website and donate if you can! It's truly inspirational, and I'm so proud to know that something like this is happening in my community) we were left over with so much shredded carrots from the epic kale salad we served. Having done the hard part of shredding all the carrots, I got the idea to make Morning Glory Muffins. I love these muffins because they are full of super delicious and healthy ingredients, and if you include fresh, in season fruit, you can cut out a portion of the sugar and they still taste great!
One happy morning glory muffin customer :)
And another of sunflower sprouts.
If you want to make these at home, it's so easy and what's great is they add texture, flavor and health to almost any meal! Put about 2 handfuls of raw sunflower seeds or any other seed in a mason jar with water to cover. Let it soak for 1 day. Every day strain the old water and wash with clean water. Within a few days, you'll have these little guys ready for snackin'.
Enjoy!

Pulled Pork Sammie?
The rain has finally come! While the earth is happy and appreciative, all I want to do is eat and sleep until the return of Spring. What better way to cope with such an upsetting situation? Consume copious amounts of slow-cooked meat until you feel physically ill.
Courtney, my housemate came home the other day beaming. She had stumbled upon "Smoky J's", an unassuming little hole-in-the wall BBQ restaurant down the street from us. http://smokeyjbbq.com/. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich on a bun, with beans. They were out of beans, so the owner substituted with spicy chili and freshly made cornbread. No complaints here... The butter-like consistency of the meat and smoky flavor, topped with 3 different kinds of home-made BBQ sauce was enough to make a vegetarian cry. (just kidding.. but really)
We proceeded to stuff our faces, and left satisfied as ever. Overall, a very good Saturday evening, and the point is, if you're in South Berkeley, and feeling carniverous, go to Smoky J's. You shan't regret it.
Hope you're all well.
Cheers!

Spring Fling
I've included some very delayed photos from pi'e day! It was a huge success. We had 8 pies, and I'm pretty sure every participant significantly increased their chances of developing severe diabetes and/or heart failure. It was great, and 2012 better watch out!!
Spring is upon us. While I want nothing else but free time and endless amounts of fresh ingredients, I must go to work everyday... However, I have found time for experiments in the kitchen, as well enjoying a few fascinating culinary spots around the city.
Enjoy photos below. I finally purchased a new camera, and I've been more than pleased with it. It is a Canon Power shot, and it takes absolutely killer, crispy, clean shots.

Beware the Ides of PIE!
It is almost that time again! The month of March not only brings the Ides, but alas, the national holiday for all bakers, 'Pi'e day!! This is the second annual 'pi'e extravaganza I'm hosting, and I can't wait! This Monday, March 14th, I along with several of my dear friends will celebrate the numerical value of pi. 3.14 (get it?). But more importantly, we will consume large quantities of the greatest dessert ever invented by human kind.
Until that post arrives, I'll share a few other foodie adventures from the last few weeks. This first picture is of kambucha butternut squash soup with roasted pumpkin seeds brought to you by Outerlands. This lovely little cafe on 45th and Judah lives in the Outer Sunset. The restaurant makes all their bread in-house, fresh everyday, and every dish is served with or on this delightfully warm, chewy loaf. They also purchase most of their produce from local farmers, including a fellow named Toby who is my brother's age, who also grew up in Davis! The world is small...
The below photo is turkey chili I made last weekend. The best thing about chili is you can put whatever you want in it, and usually it still tastes great. I browned the turkey with garlic and onions, added four kinds of beans, and canned roasted tomatoes. I think using the roasted variety is the trick to good base flavor on chili because it gives it the sort of smoky flavor. Naturally, I also seasoned with cayenne, tapatio and chili powder. It was perfect for the end of a rainy, cold weekend, and of course I made corn bread to accompany it. So comforting and delicious.
Lastly, I made a fruit compote with crème fraiche and chopped up some gingerbread I’d made to sprinkle on top. It was the perfect ending to a very filling meal.
I apologize for the quality of the pictures. I’m in the market for a new camera, actually. Hopefully I’ll employ a friend’s camera for ‘pi’e day, so that your mouths will water with pure jealousy!
Happy cooking, I hope you all have a fun, food-filled weekend!
